Fruit Bats
- Fruit Bats live in large colonies, or camps together. They live in Australia and Jamaica and other tropical places. Fruit Bats like to live in dense forests.
- There are 4000 mammals on earth and 1/4 of them are bats and they are the only mammals that can fly.
- Fruit bats eat fruit and flowers. Fruit bats help spread the seeds of many fruits and vegetables which help them grow.
- The scientific name for a bat is chiropetera- “hand-wing”. They call the bats that because the skeleton that supports the wing has long finger bones.
- Fruit bats are one of the largest size bats in the world. They are also known as megachiroptera or large hand-wing bats, because they are the largest bats. There wingspan can be up to 6ft.
- Fruit bats usually have long muzzles (noses), pointy ears and large eyes. They look like a fox and this is why they are called the flying fox.

Fruit bats have fur and wings. They are mamals, not birds.- Flying foxes ( a type of fruit bat) Have been recorded flying as fast as 50 kilometers an hour.
